This glue is harmless, although some patients report that it tastes unpleasant. When the glue has been applied, your dentist will place brackets on your teeth. Archwires are then placed into the brackets and secured with rubber bands. You will need to come back to the dentist office at least once every 4 to 6 weeks for a checkup and for the dentist to adjust your wires.

How Much Time Does It Take to Get Braces?

The procedure for having your braces put on typically takes between one to two hours. After your orthodontic device has been put on, you may experience some soreness for the next week or so. The soreness is typically managed sufficiently with over-the-count pain medications. However, if you find that you are experiencing excessive levels of pain that can’t be alleviated via over-the-counter methods, you should call your dentist immediately.

Will I Need to Wear a Retainer Afterwards?

You can expect to wear your device for a period of one to two years. Depending on your case, you may need to undergo orthodontic treatment for a longer period of time. When your treatment is complete and your teeth are in the desired position, your dentist will remove the orthodontic treatment device. This typically takes around an hour to complete. After this, your dentist or orthodontist may suggest that you wear a retainer at night when you sleep. This helps to preserve the results of your treatment and prevents the teeth from moving out of place again. You may need to wear a retainer for many years after receiving orthodontic treatment. However, custom-fitted retainers are comfortable to wear and you will grow quite used to wearing one while you sleep.
